Conclusion: the trouble with these radios

Review: We bought the gmr1048 hoping to use them at our cottage where Verizon cell coverage is hit or miss. Seemed like the the ideal solution fr keeping in touch around town and the lake. Cant say if they do work the 10 mile range they tout. The problem with these radios is battery life!! Or lack thereof. I don't know ours must be defective. After full charge you start getting half battery icon after a few transmissions. One actually dies after just a few uses with the dead battery shutoff. Really frustrating. I should have returned them but we've had them a while so my fault. Fool me once... Next time RESEARCH! I usually do but this time I thought I'd just wing it and I got burned. I have never owned 2 way radios before, I wonder if they are all as unreliable as these.

I thought I'd just buy new batteries and see if it improves the reliability. Guess what? 2 new batteries costs more than a new set of radios which includes 2 new batteries and a charger! I have not found decent aftermarket batteries either. I am UNIMPRESSED. Bad business model. If Uniden thinks they can fleece the consumer this is one person not biting, not only am I NOT buying their batteries but I am not buying any more Uniden products and I will be a lot more diligent and skeptical next time before buying. READ REVIEWS your experience will most likely parallel others' experiences on stuff like this. I will probably pitch these and learn a lesson from it.

The radios are a moot point, we found out how to get our cell phones onto another cell network at the cottage and now our cells work GREAT.

    Conclusion: very dissatisfied

Review: After buying several radios to keep the shop connected we found that the battery life lasted less than a few transmissions. I contacted the company, Uniden, and was told by custy service to write a letter and fax it to there service dept. I was told that the batteries must be bad and should be warrenteed. I faxed the letter with proof of purchase and serial numbers and didn't receive any acknowledgement. So I did it again. I have waited and tried for six months. Although I have had confidence in Uniden (only because my very first cordless home phone was Uniden)in the past I will never buy their products again and advice you not to.

    Conclusion: Nice features but ...

Review: Radios have nice features, but i have tried them in the city and during travel and they don't reach 1 mile, so it is far away from the 10 miles they said it reach.

Conclusion: Good Features, but 10 miles, dream on.

    Review: 1) Clear signal.
    2) SCRM mode - real privacy mode, not a filter like other radios.
    3) NOAA alert - really works. Checks NOAA every 7 seconds.
    4) Volume controls right under fingers.
    5) Better charger options (direct or base) than other radios.
    6) Orange Color - easy to find in backpack.
    7) Good price.

Complaints - 10 miles, dream on. 2-3 actual, but all radios
    claim 10 miles, delivering 2-3.

    Conclusion: Disappointing

    Review: Disappointing

These walkie-talkies disappointed in these two areas:

    1. Living in an area that only has buildings 2-floors in height, I could not get
these Walkie-talkies to transmit any further then only ONE MILE.

I truly didn't expect to get the manufacturers claim of a 10-mile range,
but I expected at least 7 miles, or 5 miles... not ONE MILE.

    2. The sound quality on these units is rather poor. The person on the other end sounds muffled.

A serious 2-way radio? Not this unit.

Buy it as a toy instead.
